The residential building at Dornacherstrasse 49 in Basel was completely renovated and developed in the spirit of circular construction. Emphasis was placed on the reuse of building materials, whether from the building's own deconstruction process or from external sources. The project demonstrates how the principles of reuse can be successfully applied in the construction of dense urban housing.
These included used windows, flooring, doors and technical installations. The reuse of these building elements was based on a careful survey of the existing structure and a deconstruction concept adapted to the planning. The material was supplemented by Reuse components from other deconstruction projects.
After conversion, the building meets today's requirements in terms of energy efficiency and living comfort, while using significantly fewer new resources. Dornacherstrasse 49 is an example of responsible management of existing buildings, and illustrates the potential of circular strategies in housing construction.
