Schärenmoosstrasse

  • I & II Residential

Trachsler Hoffmann Architekten's Schärenmoosstrasse project in Zurich-Leutschenbach is a successful example of sustainable conversion with a focus on reuse. The aim was to largely conserve an existing office building and convert it into low-cost housing for around 200 people. The emphasis was on reusing building materials and minimizing intervention in the existing structure. For example, steel beams from an earlier deconstruction project were reused as a base for a planned new passageway. The existing structure is complemented by new elements, such as a two-storey hall serving as an unheated winter garden, and a communal roof garden. These measures promote both ecological sustainability and social integration into the neighborhood. On the first floor, public uses such as a café, co-working spaces and workshops are planned to enhance social life. The flexibly designed apartments are adapted to different lifestyles and combine historic housing concepts with contemporary architecture. Overall, the project is an impressive example of how an ecologically and socially sustainable residential area can be created through reuse and thoughtful design.
