The ELYS House of Culture & Crafts in Basel is an example of how to transform existing buildings into contemporary multifunctional spaces, while conserving resources. The repurposing of a former industrial building now enables multiple cultural, craft and commercial uses - all in line with the principles of circular construction.
As part of the conversion, existing structures were specifically retained, redesigned and supplemented with reused materials. Interior fittings, furnishings and technical installations are largely based on Reuse components, whether from existing structures or from other deconstruction projects. This not only saves grey energy, but also creates a lively and creatively robust space.
The ELYS building is now home to cultural players, workshops, studios and social initiatives. It is an example of sustainable urban development, in which existing buildings are seen as a resource and activated by new uses. The repurposing shows that circularity is not just a technical principle, but a question of managing space, materials and community.
