The Ziegelei Ost project in Allschwil, developed by Bricks AG in collaboration with pool Architekten, Westpol Landschaftsarchitektur, Zirkular GmbH and Dr. Deuring + Oehninger AG, is an example of the sustainable transformation of existing industrial buildings. On the site of the former brickworks, a lively, mixed-use district is emerging that consistently implements the principles of the circular economy.
The reuse of existing structures is at the heart of the project. Historic brick buildings are not only preserved, but also refurbished and reused. Unnecessary building elements are thus reused on site, resulting in a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions. Integrating these existing buildings into the new context preserves the identity of the location and creates a unique urban environment.
The project calls for a differentiated construction that blends harmoniously into the existing structure. A striking tower, known as the "Lettenturm", marks the beginning of the site, its formal language inspired by historic buildings. The structure of the facades varies in height steps, creating an urban stratification that underlines the transition between old and new.
In addition to housing for around 500 to 600 people, the site will also accommodate small businesses, workshops and public spaces. A central green space encourages social interaction and serves as a relaxation area for residents. The layout of the buildings promotes the permeability of the site and allows for a wide range of uses.
The Ziegelei Ost project shows how the combination of reuse, innovative architecture and sustainable urban development can create a forward-looking district that preserves history while integrating modern living and working spaces.
