The Basel Pavilion, also known as the Loggia Baseliana, is a temporary structure on the Dreispitz site in Basel, and an exemplary project for circular, resource-conserving construction. Designed by isla architects as part of the Basel Architecture Week 2022, the pavilion was built almost exclusively from reused materials. All the building components - including steel sections, wooden planks, trapezoidal sheets, clay tiles and cardboard tubes - came from regional deconstructions and were specifically collected, catalogued and integrated into the planning by the Zirkular company. The origin and traces of use of the materials remain visible and become a design element that contributes to the history of the pavilion.
The building is made up of several modular units grouped under a long gable roof that unfolds like a kind of open veranda along the disused railroad tracks. The linear structure creates clear visual axes while opening onto the urban space. A continuous wooden bench invites you to linger, while targeted openings in the roof bring daylight into the interior. The loggia acts as a public space - meeting point, exhibition space, stage or retreat - and easily combines functionality and atmosphere.
The Basel Pavilion was prefabricated in collaboration with regional partners and erected on site. Thanks to its dismountable and reusable construction, the entire structure can be rebuilt in another location. The pavilion thus becomes a model project for circular construction in an urban context: local, temporary, respectful of resources - and yet precise and welcoming in terms of design.
