The Chölfeld rest area in Utzenstorf was built in the 1960s at the same time as the A1 motorway. With the planning and implementation of the new construction, the Chölfeld rest area has been adapted to today's requirements and needs. The surrounding brick crust acts as an active wear layer, protecting the insulated wooden structure from vandalism, and follows the polygonal plan. A freely projecting wooden roof covers the infrastructure, offering users of the rest area protection from wind and weather. The exposed bricks of the existing building were carefully dismantled, stripped of mortar remnants and woven into the new building envelope for reuse. The journey from shelf to closed-loop value chain is still in its infancy. The Chölfeld rest area is intended to be the prototype and proof of aesthetics, ecology, economy and social sustainability.
