Recyclingzentrum Juch-Areal

  • IX Industry

The Juch-Areal recycling center in Zurich-Altstetten, designed by Graber Pulver Architektur in collaboration with Zirkular GmbH and manoa Landschaftsarchitekten, is a pioneering example of resource-friendly construction in the public sector. The project aims to integrate the principles of the circular economy directly into architecture, while preserving both functional and aesthetic qualities.

The reuse of existing building elements is at the heart of the design. An existing hall structure is transferred almost unchanged to the new site, where it is supplemented by other reused elements. These include used reinforced concrete slabs, used for both the hall floor and the operating building. This approach significantly reduces CO₂ emissions: Compared with conventional new construction, almost 600 tonnes of CO₂ are saved, corresponding to a reduction of over 40% .

In addition to structural reuse, the project also focuses on ecological sustainability. A vertical plant filter improves air quality and contributes to biodiversity. In addition, the site will be planted with regionally adapted trees, which were previously considered "commodities" in nurseries. The project gives these trees a new lease of life and contributes to the greening of urban space.

The design of the recycling center reflects the principles of the circular economy.
